13 - The Bearings of Home / O Rumo de Casa

Rope and Pier
Born on ancestral shores,
the bearings of home
were imprinted forever
on the string chain
of this new and transient being.

First, the sights of a starry sky
or the brightest sun on Earth.
Then, the sounds of winds
hurling through the coastal mountains
the taste of waves.
Later, the smells of a white city
touching the cliffs of red brecha limestone.

These were the bearings of home,
all the senses' buried memories.

These are the landmarks, the milestones,
the yardsticks against which everything is measured.

These are the indispensable boundaries
for a life away,
wandering on the further side of the horizon
a shadow among shadows,
long behind the rainbow
of far-fetched ideas of change, of difference, of distance...

Far goes the boomerang
with no hint
that its own shape
brings it back, with a vengeance, to the launching hand.

Home… it must stand still, frozen in time
as the holding covenant
the binding tie,
the loose rope on that last pier
of a long forgotten port of yesteryear.

To home must return the lone travelers,
the free souls with no memory of death,
with no compass,
bereft of the Northern Star and the Southern Cross.

Those are the wandering shadows,
one of which
could have lost the bearings of home…

a corda solta naquele cais passado

12 - A Rotina

"Profile of Time" by Salvador Dali

Quando o igual de cada dia
se torna pedra

gravando os sulcos dum caminho circular,

ficou asfixiado
no molde rígido

o impossível dum gesto diferente.

11 - Sometimes

Pôr do Sol em Sesimbra
Sometimes,
to make peace with life
(and… well… fate?)

I need nothing more
than a blue sky
my green mountains
the sea breeze of home

and your smile…

10 - A Chuva na Avenida (souvenirs d'en France)

"Rue de Paris" par Gustave Caillebotte

O barulho molhado dos carros
que passam na avenida,
dá a verdadeira dimensão
à chuva que caiu
e cai…

Recuso enternecer-me

9 - Everlasting Gates to a White City

Triumph of a King, the Standard of Ur. c.2700 B.C.

This is a time between times,
those unforgiving boundaries of life.

The world is new,
as it can be
when the eyes open to a different morning.

It is five thousand years
since I first came to these shores,
the ships spent, the crews dying,
“We are the People of the western Sun, masters of the great Sea”
is written on the stone foundations of my white city.

Although I am reborn by the will of man
again and again,
although I still come to the place where we built the God’s temple
now half-reclaimed by the sea,
I no longer pray
and no one ever offers a sacrifice.

This once, I find her there.
Is she one of the virgins thrown from the highest cliff, long ago?
Is she an offering
being returned alive by the winds and the waves?

I take the God’s gift in my hands and make it mine,
no questions, no answers.
No regrets?

When I set her free
there are tears and sorrow eyes,
but without a farewell she flies away.

8 - Desejo

The Silver Way
